Bernice Deloise
White
Oct 1, 1922 — May 19, 2024
Bernice Deloise White was born on October 1, 1922, to the late Samuel and Calue "Katie" White in Nansemond County, Virginia. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Zion United Christian Church.
Bernice attended public schools in Virginia, where she developed a love for sewing. After high school, she moved to New Jersey to join her sister Clara, who had relocated there a few years earlier. In New Jersey, Bernice held various positions, including domestic worker, retail clerk, and nurse aide, before securing a role as Assistant Supervisor of the Sewing Room at Meadowview Psychiatric Hospital in Secaucus, NJ, where she spent her career until retirement.
A dedicated community volunteer, Bernice spent several years assisting local government officials and serving as an election volunteer in Hudson County. As a longtime resident of Bidwell Avenue, she was deeply involved in neighborhood activities, including block parties, and took on the role of an unofficial "neighborhood watch," vigilantly observing from her front porch day and night. Her presence as an elder in the community was respected and honored by all.
Bernice frequently hosted holiday gatherings filled with family and friends. She was a beloved matriarch who cherished every moment with her loved ones.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Katie White; brother, Collis White; sister, Clara Chisolm (nee White); and great-grandson, Caden Coleman. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Cheryl Brown and Bernal Beckles; grandchildren: Artiece Brown, Sr. (Andrea), John Sloane, Corey Coleman (Tanya), India Sloane, Kawya Mills (William), Kendrick Floyd, and Dinesha McKenzie (Dwaine); as well as a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
Let the family know you care by leaving your condolences, favorite memories and thoughts and prayers on the Tribute Wall.
