Our beloved Charlotte was the youngest of four children born to Charlotte (nee) Linton and Walter McDonald Sr. in Bishopville, South Carolina on February 21, 1921. She attended Lower Lee High School in St. Charles, South Carolina. Charlotte was united in holy matrimony on May 4, 1943 to the love of her life, her one and only, Joseph Charles, Sr. (also affectionately referred to by others as Doc, Sonnyboy and Brother). They sought the "Warmth of Other Suns" migrating north and settling in Jersey City. Three children were born to this union, Joseph Jr., Carol and James. The family joined Lafayette Presbyterian Church in 1944 and has remained members of that congregation (now Claremont-Lafayette) to the present. Charlotte served as a deacon, a member of the Bessie Mann Sisterhood, was a faithful volunteer in the Soup Kitchen program and was a founding member and officer of the Friendly Club. Charlotte (also lovingly known as Nuncie and Nana) has left an amazing footprint. She passed with flying colors the obligation of every human being; that is, she did her part in trying to make the world a better place. Her life is a testament to the Southern (indeed universal) values of family, church, community and hard work. She was predeceased by her 3 siblings: Marie, Walter and Josephine. She is survived by her husband; her 3 children; 5 grandchildren: Dawn, Joel, Tiffani, Marcus and Aislynn; 5 great-grandchildren: Aja, Donahue, Iman, Saneiya and Merissa; 1 great-great grandchild: Satoru; daughter in-laws: Michelle Richardson and Barbara Charles; nieces, nephews and friends. This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of Charlotte McDonald Charles. You are invited to add a Tribute in her memory.
