Obituary

The patriot of the Powell family has been called home to be with his Master. Louis and Estelle Powell gave birth to a son on October 2, 1914 and named him Chesterfield. He was raised with five siblings in Columbia, SC.; four sisters, Ernestine Guess, Lena LaBrew, Ruby Singley, and May Helen Powell all deceased, and with one surviving brother Willie Powell. Chesterfield was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Columbia. He was an advocate of education, and proud of his children. He always encouraged his children to read and excel in all of their goals. Chesterfield was very peaceful and had a very strong will for African Americans to strive for excellence. By encouraging strong educational values in his children it paid off because they are college graduates. He always had faith. He married the late Pearl Lee Thompson in 1937; here are the names of his eight accomplished children; Chestine (Subira), Rev.Joseph (Moe), Carol (Penny), Pearlie (Bibi), Jacqueline (Naeemah), Evelyn (Majeedah), Esther (Zakiya), and the late Elmer (Yas). From his accomplished children Bupa, as his grands called him, has several exceptional grandchildren, Randolph, Torren, Tameka, Milann, Layfayette, Enia, I'mani, Intisar, Islah, Muhsin, Muen, Ra'nesha, Mazz, and Maidah. He also has a few wonderful great-grands; Da'von, Rasheeda, Radeyah, Lyric, Lacey, Torrie, Travon, and Razalina. He shared his wisdom with his sons-in-laws George, Mumtaz, and Derrick, and was a father figure to many others. Deacon Powell was a man of God with strong faith and values. He was a former member of Union Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church in Columbia and became a member of Monumental Baptist Church after moving to Jersey. You could figure out his love of music because he always hummed a church hymn everywhere he went. He was a member of The Gospel Chorus and the Senior Choir, and he also sang for the Jersey City Senior Group, The Dollies. Every year he went to Sight and Sound Playhouse, he was always asked to perform a song. He loved singing! Deacon Powell now Emeritus Deacon Powell was a former Trustee, a member of the Helping Hand and Spiritual Advisor to the Angel of Praise Ministry. Under his leadership skills Chesterfield served his community. Montgomery Gardens honored Mr. P. with a plague for being a community leader who cared for the residents from the beginning. As a community leader he served as Tenant Management Cooperation, Montgomery Gardens TMC, and an Elevator Operator. He was affectionately known as "Mr. P" to his Montgomery family he was highly respected by the young and old. Mr. Powell was a Union Treasurer while employed at the Central Railroad in Jersey City and Raritan, New Jersey. He worked hard to support his family and retired in 1971. Deddy/Papi is what his brood lovingly called him will be greatly missed. God granted us all the opportunities to learn and receive blessings from his servant at the age of 100.
