Doretha was born on April 21, 1934 to the late James Arthur Galbreath and Edith McKoy Galbreath of Maxton, North Carolina. She was the third of 11 children. She attended Peterson Public School in Red Springs, North Carolina. Doretha accepted Christ in her life at an early age and was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Maxton, North Carolina. Upon arriving in Jersey City she joined Rehoboth Apostolic Church, Inc. where the late Elder Johnson served as pastor. Later she became an active member of Macedonia Redeemed Church located at 204 Monticello Avenue, Jersey City N.J. Doretha was married to Archie Gilchrist Sr. on September 9, 1951. To this union seven beautiful gifts were born: Archie Jr., Lawreatha, Randolph, John, Jerome, Christine, and Darlene. She moved to Jersey City, NJ with her husband and their first three children in 1957. She worked at Cuddletean Mocks in Jersey City, N.J. She loved her family and enjoyed singing and reading her Bible. Doretha was predeceased by her husband Archie Gilchrist Sr., her brothers: James Jr., Robert, Nathaniel, and John. She was also predeceased by her sister, Arlene Graham. Doretha leaves to cherish her loving memory: her seven children: Archie Jr. of Stockton, California, Lawreatha of Jersey City, N.J., Randolph Sr. (Cassaundra) of Hillside, New Jersey, John, Jerome, Christine and Darlene all of Jersey City, N.J. Sixteen grandchildren: Maurice Gilchrist of Jersey city, N.J., Randolph Gilchrist Jr. of Hillside, N.J., Reginald Gilchrist of Stockton, CA., David Gilchrist (Candis) of Cumming, GA, Carlos Gilchrist of Jersey City, Marquis Gilchrist of Jersey City, N.J., Jordan Gould (Jesse) of Oklahoma City, OK., Surreatha Gilchrist of Hillside, NJ, Diamond Gilchrist of Jersey City, NJ, Alphonso James of Jersey City, N.J., Christopher Gilchrist of Jersey City, N.J., Alvonte James of Jersey City, N.J., Star Bell and Michael Bell of Jersey City, NJ. One brother, Willie Lee Galbreath (Pearl) of Laurinburg, NC, Four sisters: Lena B. Pittman of Shannon, NC., Hartlee Haywood (John) of Red Springs, NC., Mary Edith Robinson of Greensboro, NC., and Emma Lee of North Carolina. One brother in- law, Ervin Gilchrist, of Lumberton, North Carolina; four sisters- in- law: Christine Mabry of Pfafftown, N.C.; Mary Gilchrist of Lorain, OH; Flora Gilchrist of Maxton, N.C., and Lee Bertha Galbreath of North Carolina and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great grandchildren, and friends.
