Obituary

Dorothy G. Hammond Miller transitioned on Sunday December 20, 2009 at her home in Hackensack, surrounded by loving family and friends. Born July 18, 1919 to George and Carrie Hammond in Jersey City, she was the eighth of fourteen children. Dorothy attended Public School No. 22, Lincoln High School, Drake Secretarial School, Junior College, and later, earned both her associates and baccalaureate degrees from Saint Peter's College. Dorothy was the first African American supervisor at Jersey City Medical Center where she worked for 37 years until retiring in 1987. Dorothy married Harvey L. Miller, Jr. in 1938 and to them, four children were born. Dorothy and Harvey were very active members of Christ the King Roman Catholic Church, where she served as President of the Rosary Society. Dorothy was also a past president of Women for Action, a lifetime member of the Jersey City branch, N.A.A.C.P, and a well-known and respected member of the fabric of Jersey City. Dorothy is a former board member of the Hudson County Urban League. Dorothy loved to travel, entertain and provide guidance to young people. She was an excellent dancer and danced with The Catherine Dunham troop of New York City. Dorothy traveled extensively, and made friends all over the world. Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband of 45 years: Harvey L. Miller, Jr., her loving daughter Beverly Miller James, and her adoring son, Harvey, L. Miller III. Dorothy's two youngest daughters survive her: Judith Jermaine Miller Hillman of Willingboro, NJ and Pamela Teresa Miller, Esq. of Hackensack, NJ and Washington DC. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren; sister, Dr. Gladys Hammond of Fort Washington, MD; brother-in-law Rodney Miller, Sr. of Houston, Texas; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends, both here and abroad.
