Obituary

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever." Psalm 23:6 On December 20, 2019, Edward Chris Oliver went to be with Our Lord after 80 years of service. He was born on January 13, 1939 in Savannah, Georgia to Lottie and Chris Oliver. After the passing of his beloved mother, Edward was raised in Bowman, South Carolina. Edward aka "Chris", was always fiercely independent and set off at an early age (13) to explore the country and later the world. One of his first jobs was as a fisherman in Charleston. Later he became a part of the Great Migration as he moved from South Carolina to live in Philadelphia, PA, Harlem, New York and then Jersey City, NJ. In 1964, Edward married a beautiful Educator, Bessie T. Oliver. Edward and Bessie were married for 52 years until her passing in 2016. He was a devoted father, to Christy Oliver as he and Bessie were both doting parents. Edward Oliver worked hard as a tractor trailer driver (both cross country and local) to care for his wife, Bessie and to send his daughter, Dr. Christy Oliver-Hawley to Georgetown University. His entrepreneurial spirit inspired Edward to open several businesses in Jersey City. Edward took much pride in being the owner and president of the Sidewalk Rod and Gun Club located in Jersey City. In terms of hobbies, Edward was an avid outdoorsman and survivalist. He was a skilled big game hunter and fisherman. Edward most enjoyed hunting in remote parts of Canada and Alaska. Also, he enjoyed taking vacations with his family, his most memorable vacations were to Senegal, Africa and to Aruba where he and his wife, Bessie, spent time with Harry Belafonte. After Edwards retirement he enjoyed spending time with friends and his beloved dog, Foxy. Also, Edward cared for his very special nephew the late Isaac Harris. He quietly donated to various charities and went out of his way to help anyone in need. Edward enjoyed collecting various items and taking his grandson, Andrew, to school daily. During his extended illness, Edward watched Netflix Westerns and spent time every day with his daughter, Christy and Son-in Law, David. Finally, Edward was grateful to be blessed with a caring Home Health Aide, Mr. Bright. Edward was a generous, strong, and independent man who will be missed. He leaves a host of relatives and friends. He thanks all for their love!
