Ena Rita
Gibraltar Perry
d. Aug 28, 2024
Ena Rita Gibraltar Perry née Marshall, affectionately known as "GiGi" was born on March 16, 1940 to the late Piercy Marshall and Irene Jones in Georgetown, Guyana, South America and departed this life on August 28, 2024 in West Orange, New Jersey. She received her formal education at Tutorial High School, Georgetown, Guyana then attended The College of Preceptors in London, England.
Ena immigrated to the United States in 1964 and resided in Brooklyn, New York. She continued her studies at the Spanish American Institute and received her diploma in 1968. She went on to work for Ledgermatic as an IBM data processor for 12 years until the company went out of business in 1980. A few years later she returned to her studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Institute of Business and Technology in 1986. Despite obtaining a degree in business, she shifted her interest to teaching. She taught Kindergarten and first grade, as well as Arts & Crafts at ABC Elementary School in Jersey City, New Jersey until her retirement in 2009.
In 1963 she was blessed with her first child Tyrone Marshall. Ena later married Robert Lee Perry on September 28, 1965. From this union she welcomed two children, Robin Perry-Beals and Randolph Perry.
GiGi was known for being exceptionally creative and capable of bringing to life almost anything your mind could imagine. From making centerpieces out of stockings to artificial bouquets, cummerbunds and corsages for an entire wedding party that looked as though they were delivered by a florist. She built a Christmas tree out of tulle, a snowman out of plastic cups and a pirate's treasure chest out of a cardboard box and duct tape. Anytime you took her shopping for decorative things she would say "Don't buy that. Why spend all of that money when I can make it for a lot less." And that she did.
Aside from her creativity, she was well known for her feisty attitude and slick tongue. And to have experienced her sassiness was not an insult but a rite of passage. All we can say is if you know, then you know.
GiGi is preceded in death by her parents Piercy and Irene, brother Piercy Marshall, twin brother Herman Marshall, sisters Dorothy Hinds, Joyce Lashley, and Joan Corrica. Ena leaves to cherish her memory, sons Tyrone Marshall and Randolph Perry; daughter Robin Perry-Beals; son-in-law Darron Beals; daughter-in-law Sabrina Perry; grandchildren Shakeea Aponte-Bryant, Devin Beals, Deysha Beals, Tobias Berggren, Sarah Perry, Simone Perry and Sean Perry; great-grandchildren: Maliah Duru, Sierra Roman, Jade Bryant, Janiyah Bryant and Ashlyn Duru; Sister: Yvonne Blackman; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
