Obituary

George T. Walcott was born September 13, 1936, Bronx New York to the late Grace and Theodore Walcott. George's education was through the Jersey City Board of Education , soon after leaving school he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his discharge from the Army, George was the drummer in The Robert Banks Band. After playing with them for a number of years he went to join the Tiny Grimes Band. George was a much sought after drummer for such artists as: James Moody, Roy Haynes, Sonny Payne, Telonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaugh, Charli Persip, The Spirit of Life Ensemble, The Clara Ward Singers, Scream in Jay Hawkins and many others too numerous to name George, affectionately known as "Red" in the music world but as "Georgie" to family members, was employed by the U.S. Postal Service from which he retired. He also owned a clothing store named B & G Clothing Store on the Junction in Jersey City. After retiring, he went on to work for the Jersey City Police Department as a crossing guard. In 1975, instructed by Grand Master Dong Kean Park, George became involved in the martial art of Tae Kwon Do for the past 30 years. During this time George became a Master of tae Kwon Do. Master Walcott is the highest-ranking African American to hold an 8th degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Master Walcott instructed many young people at the D.K. Park tae Kwon Do School, Jersey City. George has had many association and memberships with prestigious social clubs that included the CICA, voter regristration and continuous development with the music industry. George departed his life on December 17, 2010. His loving wife Elizabeth, his father John Theodore, his mother Grace, his brother Daniel and his son Dane precede him. He leaves to cherish his memories three sons, Brian, Keith, and Kent; tow daughter-in-laws Gloria and Keja, his step-mother Corinne, sister-in-law Leola, six grand-children: Tamla, LaNelle, Jason, Paul, Ayana, and Keith Jr, three great-grandchildren: Daqun, Jazmine, and Amir. Also two nieces: Stephanie and Brenda, one nephew Danny and a host of relatives and friends. This Online Memorial has been created to commemorate the life of George T. Walcott.
