Obituary

Lucy Lambert Johnson made her grand entrance in South Hill, Mecklenburg County, VA on May 7,1919. She transitioned peacefully from labor to reward on Sunday, November 29, 2020. We thank God for lending her to us for one hundred one (101) years. As a young lady she relocated to Jersey City, NJ where she resided with relatives until she sought and found employment as a live-in nanny. Lucy then began her career working as a dietician at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Home and later Saint Francis Hospital, both in Jersey City. While at Saint Francis she advanced to Dietary Department Supervisor, remaining there until she retired. Never one to stay still, Lucy's retirement did not last long; becoming a nanny for Kate and Thomas Horan and their young family. They subsequently became a part of her extended family. Once the children became of school age Lucy started visiting the sick and shut in. Having never driven a vehicle the public buses was her mode of transportation. All the bus drivers were her friends and she knew them all by name. There was not a place she traveled to that they did not know her! Lucy met and married her first husband, John Darsaw, an Orlando, FL native. Together they had two children, daughter Elaine and son, Larry Darsaw. Although their marriage did not last, their love for family never waivered. As a single mother she worked tirelessly to support her two children. She later married James (Ted) Johnson. He was her soulmate until his passing. She had a profound impact in the community, working on several "grassroot projects" alongside the late mayor of Jersey City, Glenn Cunningham. As the result of her and others efforts they were able to clean up Triangle Park and forced out the "Bones Gang '' from their Greenville neighborhood. Lucy always led by example and embodied fundamental values of working hard, remaining humble and honoring herself, her family and most importantly her God. Bethesda Baptist Church is where she united upon her arrival to Jersey City, under the pastorage of the late Rev. John W. Wright. A proud and loyal member of the church and its Missionary Ministry she worked in any capacity needed, serving faithfully until her health failed. Everyone in the church knew her as "Mother Lucy" or "Mama Lucy". Lucy, OUR QUEEN, now joins her loved ones who preceded her in death.
