On Thursday, April 23, 2020, longtime Jersey City resident, Ruth Sloane, passed away at Peace Care St. Josephs Nursing Home, in Jersey City, NJ, at the age of 85. Ruth was born on August 11, 1935, in Jersey City, to Anna Jefferson and George Washington Sumpter Jefferson. She attended Lincoln High School. Ruth was a member of Christ The King Church. On June 1, 1962, Ruths only daughter, Courtney Sloane was born to her and John Sloane. Ruth worked in both property management and bookkeeping in the Jersey City area. During her ten-year tenure at Montgomery Gateway, she created a summer camp program for local Latino and Black residents. Ruth also worked at the Lutheran Home, and later with Pronti Construction Co. Ruths community work included tax services for the elderly. She also assisted and provided information to seniors for various social service programs. She was a board member of Puertorriquenos Asociados for Community Organization (PACO). Ruth was an avid lover of jazz, Broadway, and had a passion for reading, basketball and card playing with friends. Ruth Sloane is survived by her beloved daughter Courtney Sloane, and her wife Cheryl R. Riley; her sister, Pearl Kates; her brother, George Jefferson, Jr., and his wife Nancy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many of her proclaimed sons and daughters.
